It has been awhile since I put up any lists so I thought I would post what I have been working on as of late. I wanted a codex army/color scheme and liked the mentors look and "limited fluff" the most. I wanted an all drop pod army, as I already had a biked themed one, and I came up with this.

Feel free to post comments, questions or critiques, as I playtest I may tweak some of the units but for right now I like where the list is at.

For those artisticly inclined I have also included a painting update.

I think Vulkan would be very useful since you have a lot of melta/flame weapons

Interesting thought. I had to take some time to think before I responded.

I came to the conclusion that putting him in is not the best idea for this list for the following reasons.

1. The loss of combat tactics. Since the army is mostly tactical squads and dreadnoughts I need to be able to make the tactical squads as good as they can possibly be. That means they need to be able to do what they do best - rapid fire with their bolters. Combat tactics also plays to that strength. As the Tac squads will mostly split into combat squads and moved seperately. The chances that they will be forced to take a moral check goes up. The tactical flexability of being able to fail, by choice, is too good to ignore. Imagine that you move to charge my unit of five marines and you shoot at them in the shooting phase to soften them up. If you cause a panic/moral check, I can choose to fail it and flee outside of six inches charge range. This means that you miss the chance to assault, and I can shoot you again with the unit the next turn - rapid fire of course.

2. Psychic Defense. As this army scales up one of its big weaknesses is the ability to deal with psycic powers. I am more inclined to use a Librarian as a second HQ choice over any other. I have this list tailored at all the points levels; 1000, 1500, 1750, and 2000 points while I am here. When I go back to Minnesota 1850 is the most common build. I will simply take my 1750 point list and add a Librarian to it for a finished list.

3. Vulkan is a Salamander. Now I'm not the biggest fluff guy around, but I am consious of the fact that The Mentors and the Salamanders probubly won't be hanging around together and writing a justification for why they are together is too much of a hassle in my opinion.

Thanks for the comment,

Scout

another interesting character is that ultramarine libby, he gives +1 to reserves and that could be pretty useful

Yeah, seems Tigrius would help out greatly as he grants rerolls to any reserve rolls. Plus, he is a libby which seems to fit your necessities well. Still, he is a tad on the expensive side, 230 pts.
Maybe drop the Assaut squad (which, incidentally, I'm not entirely sold on in the first place), cut the power fist squad down to a naked combat squad and drop a meltabomb somewhere.
That would free up enough points for Tigrius in the 2000pts setup.

...then again, I'm an Ultramarine enthusiast and a newb, so take this with a pinch of salt :)

Interesting thoughts here again.

A little bit more explaining of my list I think is needed. The main attribute to the list as it is, is the 11th drop pod. The assault squad is just a way to get 11 pods at 2000 points, because if I went the Tactical Squad route I would need ten Marines to get a Drop Pod – putting me over on points. I gave the Assault Marines just enough stuff to not be completely worthless. They are completely disposable.

The strengths to having an odd number of pods are due to the “Drop Pod Assault” special rule. Half of your pods rounded up must come in on the first turn. With 11 Drop Pods this allows me to drop 6 Dreads on the first turn right on the enemy army.

I still have 4 scoring units. I can drop and pile out in combat squads giving me 2 flamer teams, 2 melta teams and 4 missile teams. I have 5 multimeltas and 5 heavy flamers that I can allocate where needed.

Against an anti-deep strike defense this setup lets me drop all the troops on my side of the board then drop dreads where needed as they come in. One dread (the one with the autocannons) and the assault guys would drop in turn 1 in this kind of deployment as well. So, it shouldn’t matter if you put everything in reserve or not against me. If you deploy on the board, you face 6 dreads on turn one that will land in MM range (even on a bad scatter). If you put everything in reserve, then 4 Tac squads, the assault squad, and Auto cannon dread drop into firing positions and wait for you to come on the board. It’s going to suck either way, but depending upon your army build, one may be less painful then the other.

Things I am looking at currently are where I can streamline points and the effectiveness of units. Here are some lessons Learned.
- The Storm bolter on the HQ and the Power fist on the TAC SGT are just filler. I haven’t used either one in all my games I have played so far with this list.
- The Twin linked Auto cannon dreadnaught is the most survivable dreadnaught due to where he is deployed during the game, meaning he shoots and destroys more than the MM/HF Dreads.

Questions I still need answered.
- At what point level is the Librarian needed?
- Since Annihilation is still the bane of the army should I just Combat Squad everything anyway and play the army as designed and hope for the best?

More to think about I know.

I think psychic defense is always needed, you will see dangerus psykers like rune priests and farseers very often

After 4 games at the 2000 point level, all vs. various Marine armies, I found I like certian units over others, tactics that were both good and bad, so I made the following changes to my army list.

Feel free to post comments, questions or critiques, as I continue to playtest I may tweak some the units some more but I need to play more games with this version first.

For those artisticly inclined I have also included a painting update.
