2nd Missouri Cavalry, Merrill’s Horse, 1863
In this article, I will briefly describe the process of painting a bust of a Northern Cavalry member from the American Civil War. The bust comes from the FER Miniatures bust series. This was my first time to use the new AK Interactive colors to a greater extent from the set that Pepe Gallardo put together for them. Considering the limited palette, I used some Scalecolor colors as well as GW washes.
I painted the uniform using AK Prussian Blue mixed with Flat Black from Scalecolor while the cap was done with the same mixture with the addition of Basic Skin Tone from AK Interactive.
I drew out the gold details on the uniform with Dwarven and Viking Gold from Scalecolor.
I painted the face with a combination of Basic Skin Tone from AK Interactive and Indian Shadow from Scalecolor.
Then I painted the eyes and mustache. I painted the whites of the eyes with Birch color, and the pupils, hair and mustache with a mixture of Indian Shadow and Flat Black.
I ended up with leather straps that I colored using Agrax Earthshade wash.
