	If you are a bit older and from Zagreb, you probably remember Saga o Pičekima? If not, the joke will elude you. Well, hopefully beside the Croatian pun, you will like the rest of this saga. Kruno, Sebastian and Marko will take you on a miniature painting journey while they build and paint one and the same bust. Why call it a saga? Because everyone who knows Agram knows this will take a while to finish.... They chose a dead/undead knight bust by FER Miniatures. As far as we know, they will do different painting versions...

	  

	MARKO: Well, I've spent most of the week trying to decide what colours to use on the cape and the tunic. In the end I decided to go for a Hospitaller look with all black clothes except the inside of the cloak which will be white. I don't think the rest of the guys will go for this colour scheme and the fact that the tunic and the cloak are separated by the inside of the cloak makes this a perfect playground for a two-colour paintjob.

	   So the idea behind my work this week was to just put in some basecolours on the cloth. I mixed a dark grey colour and applied it to the cloak and the tunic. Similarly I painted the inside of the cloak off white.

	  

	SEBASTIAN: This time I did a quick basecoat of rhinox hide on the belt, as well as mixing some black into that brown, and placing it in the parts of the belt that’s in shadow, and a few other random places, to bring some variation to the basecoat. The thought is that this basecoat is the darkest color, and that I’ll bring it lighter and lighter with some reds and beiges, mixed with the rhinox hide.

	   I also started doing his beard, which was fun and surprisingly easy to highlight. I mixed a bit of the cold, blue grey skincolor (maybe too much?) into black as the shadow color of the beard, to keep in line with the cold style of the bust. Then I mixed more and more off-white into this black-blue grey mix, highlighting less and less of the individual beard strands. Eventually I’ll end of with an almost pure white highlight.

	Sjećate se Sage o Pičekima? E pa ovo je naša verzija. Sebastian, Kruno i Marko su naši Pičeki i nadamo se da će vas zabaviti svojim pričama o slaganju i bojanju jedne te iste biste. Zašto saga? Jer imamo dojam da će njihova rabota potrajati izvijesno vrijeme... Za sve vas koji se pitate, bista koju bojaju je od tvtke FER Miniatures. Zbog raznolikosti, Pičeki su se dogovorili da će raditi različite verzije.

	  

	MARKO: Pa, proveo sam veći dio tjedna pokušavajući odlučiti koje boje koristiti na plaštu i tunici. Na kraju sam se odlučio za izgled hospitalca sa cijelom crnom odjećom osim unutarnje strane plašta koja će biti bijela. Mislim da se ostali dečki neće odlučiti za ovu shemu, a činjenica da su plašt i ogrtač odvojeni unutarnjom stranom ogrtača čini ovo savršenim za dvobojno farbanje.

	   Dakle, ideja iza mog ovotjednog rada bila je samo staviti neke osnovne boje na tkaninu. Umiješao sam tamno sivu boju i nanijeo je na plašt i tuniku. Na sličan način sam obojao unutrašnjost plašta u bijelo.

	  

	SEBASTIAN: Ovaj put sam napravio brzi osnovni premaz Rinox Hide boje na remen, kao i miješanje crne u tu smeđu, i postavljanje na dijelove remena koji su u sjeni, i na nekoliko drugih nasumičnih mjesta, kako bih unijeo neke varijacije u osnovni premaz. Zamisao je da je ovaj osnovni premaz najtamnija boja i da ću je činiti sve svjetlijom i svjetlijom s nešto crvenih i bež boja, pomiješanih s Rinox Hide.

	   Također sam počeo raditi njegovu bradu, što je bilo zabavno i iznenađujuće lako za isticanje. Pomiješao sam malo hladne, plavo sive boje kože (možda previše?) u crnu kao boju sjene brade, kako bih ostao u skladu s hladnim stilom biste. Zatim sam miješao sve više prljavo bijele u ovu crno-plavu sivu mješavinu, naglašavajući sve manje pojedinačnih pramenova brade. Na kraju ću završiti s gotovo čisto bijelim pramenom.

	On Saturday 18.11. we visited the Slovenia Nationals model competition in Ljubljana. Clubmates Marko and Kruno competed with their figures and dioramas, and I joined in order to meet again with my Slovenian hobby friends who participated in our Turm 2023 in July. Luka and Vane held wargaming demos as side content at the competition, which was an opportunity for some gameplay. We played a game of the tabletop game Forbidden Psalm: Last War. 

	

	

	

	

	

	We had a great time, thanks to our hosts for showing us around the city on Sunday morning!

	U subotu 18.11. posjetili smo Slovenia Nationals maketarsko natjecanje u Ljubljani. Klupski kolege Marko i Kruno su se natjecali sa svojim figurama i dioramama, a ja sam se pridružila kako bih se ponovo sastala sa svojim slovenskim hobi prijateljima koji su sudjelovali na našem Turm 2023 u srpnju. Luka i Vane su držali demoe wargaminga kao popratni sadržaj na natjecanju, što je bila prilika za malo igranja. Odigrali smo partiju tabletop igre Forbidden Psalm: Last War.

Saga o bistekima II (dio 3)

SEBASTIAN: For the first painting step on the bust, I chose the skin tone. I think that's going to dictate the rest of the painting choices, so it's a good place to start. The box art has very muted colors, so I decided on another direction, not to be afraid of color, at least as a base coat, and then mute them through highlight, while still keeping the undercoat of color. So I went with a highly pigmented, cold blue, AK's Gray Blue, and highlighted with Decomposed Flesh (seemed like an obvious choice for this model), which is a relatively cold beige, mixing in more and more white. I went for a ghostly kind of effect, turned out to be more of a cold effect, which is also okay, reminds me a bit of that Night King from game of thrones. Might go for more rust colors on the armor now, than I originally planned for, as orange is a complementary color of blue. Let's see...

KRUNO: Over the past week, I've been thinking about what direction he wants to go with the bust. I figured zombie knight doesn't sound bad. So this Wednesday I've been working on an olive complexion that's more zombie friendly.

Among the other details, I dealt with the leather belt, on which I applied two or three layers of brown wash. I darkened the chainring depressions with a black wash, then brought out the highlights with a metallic steel color and dulled the shine a bit with a red wash, which I hope will give a slight hint of corrosion.

I painted the hilt of the sword, the only thing that protrudes from the knight's hands, with a combination of brass and gun metal colors and thus got a dull yellowish metal color. I put the same color on the belt buckle. I drew the whites of the eyes and teeth with white paint so that they would not be "lost" in playing with tones. I will probably cover them both with some light wash.

Until next time, I have to figure out what color the knight's scent will be. So, I'm going to surf the heraldry of the 12th-13th. century.

MARKO: I slacked off this week and just added a couple of layers of olive wash to the skin.

SEBASTIAN: Za prvi korak bojanja biste odabrao sam ton kože. Mislim da će to diktirati izbor ostalih boja, pa je to dobro mjesto za početak. Box art ima jako prigušene boje, pa sam se odlučio za drugi smjer, da se ne bojim boja, barem kao temeljnog premaza, a zatim ih prigušim kroz highlight, a da i dalje zadržim podlogu boje. Pa sam odabrao visoko pigmentiranu, hladnu plavu, AK's Grey Blue, i istaknuo s Decomposed Flesh (činilo se kao očit izbor za ovaj model), koja je relativno hladna bež, miješajući sve više i više bijele. Išao sam na efekt duhova, ispalo je da je to više hladni efekt, što je također u redu, malo me podsjeća na onog Noćnog kralja iz Igre prijestolja. Sada bih mogao dodati više boja hrđe na oklopu nego što sam prvotno planirao, jer je narančasta komplementarna boja plave. Vidjet ćemo...

KRUNO: Tijekom prošlih tjedan dana razmišljao sam u kojem smjeru želi ići s bistom. Zaključio sam da zombi vitez ne zvuči loše. Tako da sam ovu srijedu radio na maslinastom tenu koji više odgovara zombijima.

Od ostalih detalje pozabavio sam se kožnim remenjem na koje sam stavio dva-tri sloja smeđeg washa. Crnim washem zatamnio sam udubine verižnjače, zatim izvukao highlighte metalnom bojom čelika i sjaj malo prigušio crvenim washem, za kojeg se nadam da će dati laganu naznaku korozije.

Branik i jabuku mača, jedino što viri iz vitezovih ruku, obojio sam kombinacijom boja brass i gun metal i tako dobio zagasitu boju žućkastog metala. Istu boju sam stavio na kopču remena. Bijelom bojom sam izvukao bjeloočnice i zube kako ih ne bi „izgubio“ u igranju tonovima. Vjerojatno ću ih oboje još prekriti nekim svijetlim washem.

Do idući puta moram smisliti koje boje će bit odora viteza. Dakle slijedi mi surfanje po heraldici 12.-13. stoljeća.

MARKO: Ovaj tjedan sam vraški zabušavao. Dodao sam samo par slojeva maslinastog washa na lice i kožu.

On Saturday, 18.11.2022. in Ljubljana, the Slovenian National Championship in plastic modeling was held. Our delegation performed in several categories and participated in a wargaming event.

The first unpleasant surprise was at the very entrance: in the queue for competitors with online registration, there were also competitors without such registration (in fact, instead of two different queues, there was only one) so we waited about 20 minutes for registration (with only three competitors in line in front of us). Also, we were surprised by the decision that there is (no longer) a discount for online registration. After the initial shock and calming down through the setting up of our entries into categories, the most important thing was to meet again and talk with colleagues from other cities and countries such as Slovenia and Italy.

After setting up and greeting our friends, we toured the city and had lunch!

Below is a photo gallery of the works. Unfortunately, the lighting was not gentle on our cameras, so many details of the model are not visible. The models are placed (again) so that the windows and the light source are behind them – so we are looking at the backlight the whole time. Furthermore, the cluttering in the categories from K1 to K5 is so great that it was not possible to distinguish where one category starts and ends. The standard chaos in the categories for miniatures that we are used to in all IPMS (and related) competitions was not absent here either. All figures in one category so you have a wargaming 28mm miniature with a historical bust figure in 1/9 scale. Kudos to the judges who deal with this chaos!

The highlight of the competition was the painting workshop led by the talented Anže Zovko at the Back to Basics / miniatures.si stand. He painted the fireman's face. The workshop was well structured, the steps in painting were clearly explained and demonstrated on the miniature itself. And in the end, our Marko successfully wired the painted face!

As part of the competition, our friends from Wargaming Slovenia exhibited, as well as the Slovenian team that performed at our Turm 2023 this year with a demonstration of the strategy board game Forbidden Psalm: Last War, in which our Ana also participated. It was a pleasure to watch their boards and figures!

In the end, there was some more waiting. Which dragged on until 5:30 p.m. (even though the awarding ceremony was originally planned for between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The organizers opened the hall at 5:35 p.m. and then they started stacking the certificates, medals, awards and removing the cups from the foils in which were lying in boxes. All in front of an audience eager for results. Given that we were late for check-in to the apartment, as soon as the prizes in "our" categories were awarded, we snuck away (the joy can be seen on our Mark!) and we hereby apologize to all our friends with whom we did not say goodbye!

Fortunately, the mood was corrected by the wargaming team, which (after the Latvia - Croatia match) took us out for drinks and dinner.!

All in all, the social aspect of the event is great, but whoever plans to come, arm yourself with patience because the amount of waiting and the lack of accurate information at every step is enormous. The registration, although done online, took over 20 minutes (and there were three competitors before us), the discount for online registration (no longer) exists, standing in line to find out the price of the model (because none of them have a stated price) was over half an hour (with four customers in line in front), additional shopping for another 20 minutes (same thing), let's not talk about allocation and moving. We have the impression that the organizer must decide whether he wants to sell models or organize a competition. After the decision, leave the rest to others - it will be much more pleasant for all competitors and visitors. Especially for us who travel. Hopefully things will change in 2024, see you next year!

U subotu, 18.11.2023. u Ljubljani održavalo se Državno prvenstvo Slovenije u plastičnom maketarstvu. Naša delegacija je nastupila u nekoliko kategorija te u wargaming demonstraciji.

Prvo neugodno iznenađenje bilo je na samom ulazu: u redu za natjecatelje s online registracijom, bili su i natjecatelji bez te registracije (u stvari, umjesto dva različita reda, bio je samo jedan) pa smo čekali 20ak minuta za registraciju (uz samo tri natjecatelja u redu ispred nas). Također, zapanjila nas je odluka da (više) nema popusta za online registraciju. Nakon prvotnog šoka i smirivanja kroz postavljanje, najbitnije je bilo ponovno se susresti i popričati sa kolegama iz drugih gradova i država poput Slovenije te Italije.

Nakon postavljanja i pozdravljanja sa prijateljima, razgledali smo grad i odradili ručak!

U nastavku slijedi galerija fotografija radova. Na žalost, osvjetljenje nije bilo nježno prema našim kamerama pa dosta detalja sa modela se ne vidi. Modeli su stavljeni (opet) tako da su prozori i izvor svjetlosti iza njih – tako da cijelo vrijeme gledamo u kontraliht. Nadalje, gužva u kategorijama od K1 do K5 je tolika da se nije dalo razlučiti gdje jedna kategorija počinje, a gdje završava. Standardni kaos u kategorijama za minijature na koje smo navikli na svim IPMS (i srodnim) natjecanjima ni ovdje nije izostao. Sve figure u jednoj kategoriji pa imate wargaming 28mm figuru sa povijesnom bistom u mjerilu 1/9. Svaka čast sucima koji izlaze na kraj sa tim đumbusom!

Highlight natjecanja bila je radionica bojanja koju je vodio talentirani Anže Zovko u sklopu štanda Back to Basics / miniatures.si . Bojao je lice vatrogasca. Radionica je bila dobro strukturirana, koraci u bojanju jasno objašnjeni i popratno demonstrirani na samoj minijaturi. A na kraju, naš Marko je uspješno nažicao obojano lice!

U sklopu natjecanja izlagali su naši prijatelji iz Wargaming Slovenija kao i slovenska ekipa koja je nastupila na našem ovogodišnjem Turm 2023 sa demonstracijom stolne strateške igre Forbidden Psalm: Last War u kojoj je sudjelovala i naša Ana. Bio je užitak gledati njihove table i figure!

Na kraju je uslijedilo još malo čekanja. Što se odužilo do 17:30 (iako je prvotno dodjela bila planirana za između 16:00 i 17:00. Dvoranu su organizatori otvorili u 17:35 te su onda počeli slagati certifikate, medalje, nagrade te vaditi pehare iz folija u kojima su ležale u kutijama. Sve pred publikom željnom rezultata. S obzirom da smo kasnili na check in u apartman, čim su dodjeljene nagrade u “našim” kategorijama, mi smo šmugnuli (veselje se vidi na našem Marku!) te se ovim putem ispričavamo svim prijateljima s kojima se nismo pozdravili!

Na svu sreću, štimung je ispravila wargaming ekipa koja nas je (nakon tekme Latvija – Hrvatska) izvela na cugu i večeru!

Sve u svemu, društveni aspect događaja je super, ali tko god planira doći, nek se oboruža strpljenjem jer količina čekanja i manjka točnih informacija na svakom koraku je ogromna. Registracija iako odrađena online je trajala preko 20 minuta (a bilo je tri natjecatelja prije nas), popust na online prijavu (više) ne postoji, stajanje u redu da bi se saznala cijena makete (jer nijedna nema iskazanu cijenu) je bila preko pola sata (sa cetiri kupca u redu ispred), dodatna kupovina još 20 minuta (ista stvar), o dodjeli i pomicanju da ne pričamo. Dojma smo da se organizator mora odlučiti želi li prodavati makete ili organizirati natjecanje. Nakon odluke, ono drugo neka prepusti drugima – bit će svim natjecateljima i posjetiteljima bitno ugodnije. Pogotovo nama koji putujemo. Uz nadu da će se stvari promijeniti u 2024, vidimo se sljedeće godine!

	KRUNO: I started with the skintones. It is the "deepest" layer, so I wanted to paint it first. The tones turned out to be a bit too vibrant for the bust look, but we'll fix that next time.

	  

	  

	  

	  

	MARKO: Unlike Kruno, I decided to tackle the sword first. I started with the darkest shade (black) which is not normally the way I like to paint figures, especially large ones like busts. After an hour and a half of color application, I was not satisfied. I guess I'll start over next Wednesday.

	  

	After the failed experiment, there was still time left, so I decided to throw myself into leather - for pretty much the same reasons that Kruno mentioned... And I also added a little color to the washes on the chainmail...

Jer imamo dojam da će njihova rabota potrajati izvijesno vrijeme... Za sve vas koji se pitate, bista koju bojaju je od tvtke FER Miniatures. Zbog raznolikosti, Pičeki su se dogovorili da će raditi različite verzije.

	  

	KRUNO: Kreno sam s kožom. Ona je "najdublje" smještena pa sam želio prvo to obojati. Tonovi su mi ispali malo preživahni za izgled biste, no popravit ćemo to sljedeći put.

	  

	  

	  

	  

	MARKO: Za razliku od Krune, odlučio sam prvo pozabaviti se mačem. Krenuo sam od najtamnije nijanse (crne) što inače nije način na koji volim bojati figure, pogotovo velike poput bisti. Nakon jedno pol sata nanošenja boja, nisam zadovoljan. Pretpostavljam da ću sljedeću srijedu krenut ispočetka.

	  

	Nakon neuspjelog eksperimenta, ostalo je još vremena pa sam odlučio bacit se na kožu – iz prilično istih razloga koje je Kruno naveo… A malo sam i washevima dodavao boju na chainmail…
